That’s right, Google removed and disabled The Great Suspender extension. So the news that Google is giving them the boot from the Chrome Web Store on top of completely disabling it from everyone’s Chrome browser is hitting me especially hard.

If you choose to install 7.16, make sure that you unsuspend all suspended tabs before disabling / removing the current version.Full disclosure: I’ve been using The Great Suspender extension for literally years now.

Instructions for installing it directly from the source code (very easy!) are in the README for the extension, located here: All of the experienced people here, please don't be too brutal with me lmao, as I'm sure this was a very stupid way of doing things, but again. Which threw some error when I then installed TGS, but everything works completely as expected. Works fine.īecause I know absolutely nothing about programming, but still didn't want the (fairly innocuous imo) Google Analytics, which was always present in TGS, and the option to disable it is not present in v7.16, I opened the gsAnalytics.js file located in \src\js with NotePad++ and changed line 146 from: '', You can always just install version 7.16 of The Great Suspender directly from the source. I will quote from my comment at GitHub for the rest:
Chrome suspender youtube how to#
Here is a guide on how to (hopefully) recover tabs, if you've lost access to them through TGS updating or being disabled/removed while tabs were suspended: There are workarounds to attempt to fix this, but it's better to avoid the problem if possible. The issue with not unsuspending tabs before disabling/removing TGS is that it may make the tab(s) unable to be reloaded. There is no reason to think that this entity won't pull a similar stunt months from now. It's my understanding that the latest release no longer contains the tracking code, but I don't trust it, and I strongly urge everyone else not to trust it.

It's also obviously problematic that the new owner is not keeping the GitHub repository in synch with the Chrome Web Store releases, and refuses to communicate with anyone.

If TGS is disabled, it no longer can transmit any of this data. The issue was that it was directing analytics data (and who knows what else) to third party sites, by calling upon third party remote scripts. I wouldn't worry about lingering malware from TGS. Also, if you can reload the session where the suspended tabs did not unsuspend, there's a chance to retrieve them. Questions? Problems? Submission not showing up? Spot a spammer or a troll?
